What is the process order when painting a piece?
Many would argue this is the wrong way but it's still a common approach and it's the way I do it so lets go.
Step 1:
Roll up the wall with roller paint.
Or if you're lazy or in a hurry, just sketch up the piece right away.
Don't worry about missing a connection, just draw the line 3 times til it sits well.
Often you want to make another sketch up with another color over the first one to
help you later finding the correct lines.
I'll use a skinny or regular cap for this.
Step 2:
Start with the letter fill.
I'll use a fat cap that gives a large circular dot and can fill a huge area really fast.
Try your best to keep a little left on all your colors.
A common misstake is to drain a can and later notice you need to patch it up but you're out of that color.
Step 3:
When I'm happy with the base fill I'll start adding stripes and doodads.
I don't have a plan or sketch for this part, I just play it out and see what happens.
Many times I think it looks bad and go over it again and again.
Step 4:
Now I'll make the outlines. I think most artists would wait til later with the outlines but I prefer to
do it at this stage to get a feel for the piece. Later I'll add a background and character so I have to
make the outline again but that's good becaus then I know if it works or not.
Adding a Keyline, that's the turqoise line outside the outlines.
Background...
Added a 3d effect at the bottom.
Step 5:
Step back and study your piece. You're sure to see things you can better.
Notice the small details such as the dark purple thing coming down the U, I added a thicker border to that.
And the dark brown stripe and the bottom of the E now got some dots to it. Stuff like that enhance the result I think.
Lightlights is the last thing you'll add.
